Hero Awards 2023: A Case of Mismanagement and Neglect at KP Sports Directorate

The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Sports Directorate has been criticized for its gross mismanagement and questionable practices regarding the Hero Awards 2023. More than a year has elapsed since the directorate signed a contract with a contractor to organize the awards, but the event is still in limbo, leaving athletes and stakeholders disillusioned.

In contrast, the Sports Directorate was allocated a huge amount, and an advance payment to the contractor was made without any result. Sources inside the department have confirmed that no concrete updates or timelines have been provided, adding fuel to the speculation that the finances are not in order.

Adding to the controversy, the selection criteria for the awardees are still unknown. It is said that a committee was formed to manage the selection process, but the names of its members and their qualifications are not known. Such a process raises questions about its integrity, as one sports analyst commented, "How can you trust a system that keeps everything hidden? Athletes deserve better.

For the athletes of KP, the Hero Awards were supposed to be a moment of recognition and motivation. Instead, the delay has been so long that it has sent a damaging message about the commitment of the government towards sports. A national-level athlete from Peshawar said, "We put in our blood, sweat, and tears, but the authorities seem more focused on bureaucracy than honoring our efforts."

This debacle signifies a greater issue of the inefficiency and lack of accountability in the Sports Directorate. Key questions remain unanswered:

Advance payments to the contractor with no assurance of performance was made; what is the true selection process for these awards, and who monitors it? Is the directorate not interested in coming out in the open over these delays?

The community of sports and concerned citizens are demanding immediate action from the department:

Transparency: Public disclosure of the selection criteria, committee members, and financial transactions.

A complete investigation into the misuse of funds and delayed implementation.
Athlete Recognition: Immediate steps to ensure that meritorious athletes are not victimized by bureaucratic delays.
A Stain on KP Sports

The Hero Awards 2023 were conceived as a tribute to excellence in sports, but they have instead revealed a culture of mismanagement and neglect. Unless accountability and reform are initiated, the KP Sports Directorate stands to lose its credibility among athletes and the public.
