Provincial Sports Directorate Organizes Horse and Cattle Show for Three Days
The horse and cattle show, which the provincial sports directorate had organized for three days, culminated with a jerky performance at Colonel Sher Khan Army Stadium here in Peshawar. The festival seems to have broken all previous tents pegging competitions in Peshawar as above 300 clubs from Punjab, Kashmir, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including 50 clubs from KP participated in it.
A female tent pegger for the first time participated in the
singles competition who represented the city of Faisalabad. The chief guest for
the inaugural ceremony remained Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while
Pakhtoon Yar and Fakhar Jahan -ministers for Irrigation and Sports-closed the
ceremony and gave cash prizes, medals, and shields to the winner. Traditional
sports events such as Mukha, Karka, Gatka, wrestling, Doda, and Kabaddi, along
with a horse dance and stalls for women, attracted thousands of viewers,
including visitors from neighboring cities.
The opening ceremony involved a spectacular free fall by the commandos of SSG Pakistan Army who jumped from 10,000 feet. Then came the commandos, who presented the national flag to the Chief Minister. He readily accepted it and proudly handed over cash prizes to them. Thereafter came martial artist Naimat Khan with his team. They were rewarded in cash through their excellent performance.
The Livestock Department demonstrated their local breeds for
livestock, the high-yielding ones included. The rest of the events included
vintage car competition and numerous 4x4 vehicles. Dog races, where dogs chased
a rabbit, added excitement to the event, and the Corps Commander of the 11th
Corps was also present and presented with honorary shields.
On the second day, the grounds hosted a rock-lifting contest and a horse dance performance. Again, it was the turn of the Chief Minister's team and a horse from the Directorate of Merged Districts that stole the show. The clubs of the Chief Minister participated extensively in team and individual tent pegging competitions.
Another highlight of his marksmanship is the Director of
Merged Districts Sports Directorate Razzi Ullah. Competitions usually held in
places like Swabi, Lakki Marwat, and Hazara were for the first time conducted
in Peshawar and proved to be very exciting to attend. The shows also held Urdu
and Pashto poetry recitals by prominent poets.
Competition of pets consisted of cats, dogs, birds, and an
art exhibition showed the work of fine arts students. There were music
performances attracting families as well as children. Stalls for food were
arranged consisting of Sohan Halwa from Dera Ismail Khan, Chapli Kebab from
Charsadda, and Kashmiri tea.
Due to a heavy turn-up at the ceremony, there were separate
stages allocated for the VIP guests, but the Chief Minister was unable to make
the tour. In his place, the provincial ministers issued the awards. Towards the
late hours of the night, Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur passed through and
thanked the departments involved in organizing the event, promising to hold
such ceremonies every year.
This first Horse and Cattle Show organized in Peshawar proved to be a first for Sports Directorate officials as they worked day and night to get such an initial event to its greatest success, with the closure of Sports Directorate for three days by Director General Sports and calling district sports officers for the purpose.
However many officers were not quite habituated with such
demanding jobs and, to my surprise, some went absent. Administrative staff from
the Sports Directorate had to regulate the crowd during the opening, though
issues such as dog races being disrupted by the huge number of people were
raised.
Despite some mishaps, the Horse and Cattle Show established the benchmark for traditional and cultural events of Peshawar city and the province as a whole, reminding people of the true meaning of historic and traditional sports culture.
