Peshawar's 16 Girls' Colleges: A Disastrous State of Sports – Only Five Colleges Participate
In Peshawar district, there are around sixteen girls'
colleges that supposedly offer sports admissions every year, with a Director of
Physical Education tasked with promoting sports and bringing in athletes. Yet,
shockingly, only five colleges participated in the recent inter-district hockey
competitions, and many of the players were not even hockey athletes, but
participants from other sports.
This situation is nothing short of a scandal. Despite these
colleges claiming to offer sports programs and the salaries of grade 17
officers funded by public taxes, no serious action is being taken to develop
athletes. If only five colleges have active athletes, then the question must be
asked: how are sports admissions being conducted in the other colleges? Is this
a mere facade?
The following are the girls' colleges in Peshawar, where
sports admissions are supposedly being made:
Govt. City Girls College, Gulbahar Peshawar
City District Govt Degree College for Women, Peshawar
Govt. Girls Degree College No 1 Hayatabad, Peshawar
Govt. Girls Degree College Bacha Khan, Kohat Road Peshawar
Govt. Girls Degree College Jamrud, District Khyber
Govt. Girls Degree College Ekkaghund, Mohmand
Alamzeb Shaheed Govt Girls College of Commerce &
Management
Govt. Girls Degree College Gulshan Rehman Colony Kohat Road,
Peshawar
Govt. Girls Degree College Mathra, Peshawar
Govt. Girls Degree College Chagarmatti, Peshawar
Govt. Girls Degree College, Dabgari
Govt. Girls Degree College, Zaryab Colony
Govt. Girls Degree College, Nahaqi
Govt. Girls Degree College, Hayatabad No 2
Iqra Degree College, Warsak Road, Peshawar
Govt. Girls Degree College Chagarmatti, Peshawar
These institutions are failing their students. The Director
of Physical Education, who has held the position for over a decade, has not
developed a single athlete worthy of recognition. This negligence results in
students being forced to participate in multiple sports, as they are merely
used as placeholders rather than being properly trained. It’s clear that these
so-called sports programs are a mere sham, serving as a box-ticking exercise.
The sad reality is that the Higher Education Department’s
sports initiatives have devolved into nothing more than a hollow system where
athletes are not nurtured, and taxpayers’ money is being wasted on salaries for
officials who fail to deliver. The system is broken, and no one seems willing
to address the issue.
