Open-Air Gym Equipment at Peshawar Sports Complex Damaged, Millions Wasted Due to Negligence
The open-air gym at Peshawar Sports Complex, built four years ago, now lies in ruins, with most of the machines damaged beyond repair. As part of a thousand sports projects, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Directorate constructed similar open-air gyms in various locations, costing a total of 2.2 million rupees. The contractor had agreed to be responsible for maintenance for five years.
However,
at Peshawar Sports Complex, the contractor destroyed much of the gym equipment,
claiming it interfered with the football grounds. Now, many machines have
completely broken down, and some items have gone missing, yet no one has taken
notice. The administration of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Directorate has
neither contacted the contractor to address the damage nor attempted to repair
the broken equipment.
As a
result, 2.2 million rupees from public taxes have gone to waste in just four
years. Similar open-air gyms were constructed in places like Abbottabad as part
of a thousand sports projects, but they were neither maintained nor handed over
to the relevant departments. This negligence has led to the complete
destruction of the gym equipment.
