Non-Functioning of Provincial Sports Management Committee – A Violation of Government Policy

Peshawar ,  According to Section-11 of the Sports & Youth Policy 2018, a management committee is required for all sports facilities in the province. The committee is responsible for providing strategic guidance to the Sports Department, designing programs for general participation in sports, managing the Provincial Sports Fund, offering financial and technical assistance to Community Sporting Organizations, schools, and coaching programs, categorizing sports facilities, and implementing sports-related legislation. Additionally, the committee advises the government on issues related to athletes' character development and sports medicine.

The Provincial Sports Management Committee was constituted and notified on August 26, 2020, under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Policy 2018. However, it has been reported that the committee has not convened any meetings and has not carried out its designated functions for over three years. Sources indicate that the lack of committee meetings has led to delays in important decisions, such as the formation of sports programs, planning new coaching initiatives, and the categorization of sports facilities.

Sources within the Sports Department suggest that the absence of the committee has hindered the development of sports in the province, especially at a time when there is a growing need for more sporting facilities and support for athletes.

The provincial government has directed the Sports Department to hold the committee's meeting as soon as possible to take necessary steps for the development of sports in the province.
