Financial Irregularities Revealed in Peshawar District Sports Office Report
Peshawar: The District Sports Office Peshawar did not register any club in 2022, despite having 24 employees on staff. The administration took nearly a year to respond in October 2024 to an information request filed under the Right to Information Act, seeking details for 2022.
According to the response, nine events were organized in
2022. The first event was the Regional Squash Championship, costing 0.2 million
rupees. The second major event, "Games for People with Different
Abilities," aimed at special athletes, incurred expenses of 1.9 million
rupees. The third event, the Chief Minister’s Football League, had expenses
amounting to 0.024 million rupees. The fourth event, Peshawar Football League,
cost 0.237 million rupees, while the fifth event, "Drug-Free Peshawar
Games," had expenditures of 1.71 million rupees.
The sixth event, "Tri-Region Female Games," cost
0.8 million rupees, and the seventh event, Inter-Constituency Games, involved
expenditures of 1.31 million rupees. The eighth event was the distribution of
sports equipment at Central Jail Peshawar, which cost 0.092 million rupees. The
final activity was the sponsorship of the Under-19 cricket team for the PCB
Under-19 Tournament, costing 0.016 million rupees.
Surprisingly, the number of players was only disclosed for
three events, while information for six events was withheld. According to the
Right to Information response, 120 athletes participated in both the Special
Games and the Drug-Free Games, and 645 athletes were listed for the
Directorate-level Inter-Constituency Games. It is even more perplexing that
player allowances (TA/DA) were only detailed for two events. Special Games
athletes received 987 rupees each, totaling 118,500 rupees, while 645 athletes
in the Inter-Constituency Games received 695,400 rupees, equaling approximately
1,495 rupees each.
In 2023, the District Sports Office did not register any
club either, but expenses included 70 liters of petrol. Two more events, along
with images, were reported, including the "Special Children
Olympics," costing 3.0 million rupees. Additionally, Independence Day
celebrations cost 1.55 million rupees, covering fireworks and sports
competitions. However, details of the sports played and the number of
participants were not provided.
