Peshawar to Host Historic Pakistan-Level Marathon Race on BRT Track

For the first time in Peshawar’s history, a national marathon race is set to unfold on September 6, 2024, marking a significant milestone for the city and the nation. This pioneering marathon will take place on the newly constructed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) track, a route spanning under 25 km with over 30 stations.

Organized by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Directorate with technical support from the Pakistan Athletics Federation, this event will bring together athletes from across Pakistan. As of now, nearly 1,800 athletes have registered online, with registration still open. For last-minute entries, athletes can register at Chamkani Business Center until 7 pm on the eve of the race.

The marathon will commence at 9:30 pm, with the route beginning at the BRT start point and concluding at Hayatabad Sports Complex. The Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is expected to attend, and Mushir Khel will be the special guest, distributing prizes to the top 20 finishers. Prizes include Rs 300,000 for the first runner-up, Rs 200,000 for the second runner-up, and Rs 100,000 for the third.

With the goal of showcasing Peshawar’s safety and vitality at night, the event is also a platform to boost sports activities and highlight the city’s progress. The race will feature separate categories for professionals and enthusiasts, with only professionals covering the full 25 km.

The Provincial Sports Directorate aims to identify promising athletes for future competitions, including the Quaid-e-Azam Games and National Games. Despite ongoing challenges with facilities, including a delayed tartan track, this marathon represents a significant step forward for athletics in the region.
