Maria Turpakkai’s Fight for Justice: A Champion’s Struggle Against Unfair Dismissal
Maria Turpakkai, a celebrated national and international
athlete, who has won numerous gold medals for the country, is currently
fighting a legal battle for her rights. A case against WAPDA (Water and Power
Development Authority) is pending in court, with the next hearing scheduled for
September 11. Maria’s dismissal from her job, which she claims was politically
motivated under the influence of PTI, has raised concerns about the treatment
of athletes in Pakistan.
In a video message sent to journalists, Maria shared her ordeal,
explaining how despite her exceptional achievements, she was never given the
recognition or promotion she deserved. “I won several national and world
championships and earned gold medals for my country. However, I was never
promoted and remained stuck in Grade 15, while less experienced players were
given higher grades and opportunities,” she stated.
Maria believes that her dismissal was unjust and politically
influenced, marking it as a significant battle for her rights and justice.
Despite her exemplary track record, she was sidelined and removed from her
position. She now seeks fairness not only for herself but for all athletes who
face similar injustices.
“This is not just my fight; it’s a fight for all the
athletes who have been neglected despite their hard work and dedication,” she
emphasized. The court’s upcoming hearing will determine the next steps in
Maria’s pursuit of justice and her continued struggle against an unfair system.
