Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium Construction Delays: Billions Spent, but Project Stagnates Amid Controversy

The Arbab Niaz Cricket Stadium in Peshawar, under the management of the Directorate of Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has been entangled in a long-standing construction project that has spanned several years without reaching completion. Despite billions of rupees being poured into the project, the stadium remains unfinished, raising concerns among the public and media alike.

The Communications and Works (C&W) Department has been tasked with overseeing the construction, with numerous engineers visiting the site under various pretexts—sometimes under the guise of inspecting generators or other equipment. Yet, the project seems stuck, unable to move forward or be halted altogether.

Public scrutiny has intensified as social media platforms and television channels have highlighted the substandard construction work in certain areas. Questions have been raised about the project’s transparency and accountability, with multiple directors being appointed and new positions being created along the way.

A separate but equally significant issue revolves around the unresolved matter of the rents of shops built outside the stadium. These shops were allotted in the 1990s, but when disputes over rents arose, payments were suspended. Despite this, certain officials within the Directorate reportedly continued to collect rent secretly, with allegations surfacing that some even used the money for personal benefits, such as performing Hajj—a religious pilgrimage that should not be funded by ill-gotten gains. While this clandestine activity was supported by some religious figures, it has faced public condemnation.

With the attention now shifting towards these unresolved issues, there is hope that both the stadium's construction and the rent disputes will soon be resolved.
