Investigative Concerns Arise Over Turf Quality at Lala Ayub Hockey Stadium

Peshawar – The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Directorate is under scrutiny following allegations regarding the quality of the newly installed hockey turf at the renowned Lala Ayub Hockey Stadium.

This project, valued at approximately twelve crore rupees, was completed by a Canadian-Pakistani contractor in a remarkably quick timeframe of just one year, far exceeding the original six-month deadline.

Issues were raised by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Hockey Association, which reported noticeable flaws, including wrinkling, malfunctioning fountains, and non-compliant goal posts. The association's president, Syed Zahir Shah, formally alerted the Sports Directorate about these concerns. In response, an investigative committee led by DG Sports Miss Rashida Ghaznavi was established, featuring members from the Pakistan Sports Board. Their findings confirmed the turf's subpar quality.

Nevertheless, Deputy Director Shahid Islam allegedly urged media outlets to refrain from reporting of his visit to stadium . Adding to the turmoil, disturbing reports have emerged indicating that unidentified individuals have driven nails into the turf, presumably to mask its imperfections.

This act has intensified speculation regarding potential government interference in the management of the nation’s sports facilities.
