Cricket Academy Sees Dramatic Player Fluctuations
Peshawar: The provincial government's cricket academy is
facing a significant challenge with fluctuating player numbers throughout the
year. While the facility experiences a surge in enrollment during the summer
break due to school and college vacations, it witnesses a sharp decline in
February when students are occupied with exams.
Currently, around 400 cricket enthusiasts are receiving
training at the academy under the supervision of one permanent and three
contractual coaches. However, concerns have been raised about the quality of
some trainees. Reports suggest that several players, who are actually at the
club level, are enjoying free training by falsely claiming to be provincial or
national-level athletes. It is alleged that these individuals have connections
within the Sports Directorate.
In an attempt to streamline the training process and ensure
fair access, former Director General of Sports, Junaid Khan, had implemented a
policy restricting free training to only provincial, national, and international-level
players. Dedicated training schedules were also introduced for these
categories.
The inconsistent player turnout and alleged irregularities
in the academy's operations have sparked debates about the effectiveness of the
facility in nurturing young cricket talent.
