Lack of Data Hamstrings Sports Development in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

PESHAWAR  - A lack of comprehensive data on athletes and sports clubs is hindering efforts to develop sports in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to a report.

The report, which raises concerns about transparency and mismanagement, highlights the challenges faced by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Directorate and other sports associations in the province.

Data Deficiencies: The Directorate and other associations lack crucial data on the number of athletes and registered sports clubs across the province. This makes it difficult to assess the current state of sports and plan for future development.

Misused Funds: The report alleges that funds allocated for sports projects are not always used effectively. In some cases, funds are not reaching their intended beneficiaries, while in others, substandard work is done on sports facilities.

Flawed Talent Hunts: Initiatives like the Prime Minister's Talent Hunt program are criticized for failing to identify and nurture young talent. The report suggests a lack of proper selection procedures and a focus on connections over merit.

Favoritism in Selection: The report alleges that selection for competitions is often based on favouritism and personal connections rather than on merit and athletic ability. This discourages talented players who lack the necessary connections.

Inaction by Authorities: District Sports Officers, who are responsible for implementing the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Policy 2018, are failing to fulfill their duties. The policy mandates the registration of sports clubs and the collection of data on athletes, but this is not being done effectively.

The report calls for a number of measures to address these issues, including:

Implementing a system to collect and maintain data on athletes, sports clubs, and sports facilities across the province.

Ensuring transparency and accountability in the allocation and use of funds for sports development projects.

Establishing a fair and transparent selection process for sports competitions based on talent and performance.

Holding sports authorities accountable for fulfilling their responsibilities as outlined in the provincial sports policy.

The provincial government has yet to comment on the report. However, sports enthusiasts and experts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are urging the authorities to take immediate action to address these concerns and create a more positive environment for sports development in the province.
