Provincial Sports Directorate Stonewalls on Hockey Stadium Information Requests
PESHAWAR - Transparency concerns cloud the Provincial Sports
Directorate after persistent attempts to acquire information regarding
publically funded hockey stadium projects have been met with silence.
A resident of Peshawar, filed a Right to Information (RTI)
application on July 10, 2023 (directory number: 1137) seeking crucial details
on the following:
The total number of hockey stadiums in the province.
Contractors responsible for construction, project completion
timelines, and the associated expenditure per stadium.
Specific locations of each stadium.
Breakdown of permanent and temporary employees assigned to
the facilities.
Total expenditure incurred on stadium maintenance.
The current operational status of the stadiums, including
the number fully functional.
Details regarding stadiums constructed and supervised by the Sports Directorate's engineering
wing, including their present condition.
Despite exceeding the mandated response timeframe, the
Sports Directorate has yet to acknowledge or provide any information regarding
the RTI request.
Citizen expressed disappointment, stating, "Filing an
RTI request was my legal right to access information regarding how public funds
are being utilized. The silence from the Sports Directorate is concerning and
raises questions about transparency in these projects."
Repeated attempts to contact the Sports Directorate for
comment have proven unsuccessful.
Legal experts have weighed in, highlighting the importance of adhering to RTI guidelines.
This lack of response from the Sports Directorate suggests a
potential disregard for public accountability and adherence to RTI regulations.
The public has a right to know how their tax money is being spent, particularly
on projects of significant scale like these stadiums.
Citizen calls upon the Sports Directorate to immediately
address the RTI application and provide the requested information. Transparency
is paramount in ensuring responsible governance and preventing potential misuse
of public funds.
