Coaches Highlight Neglected Training, Renovation Spending Spree
Peshawar, Pakistan - In a scathing letter addressed to the
Chief Minister, Advisor Sports, and Secretary Sports of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a
group of daily wage coaches have highlighted the alleged neglect of training
programs and misuse of funds within the Provincial Sports Directorate.
The letter, penned by a concerned coach on behalf of his
colleagues, criticizes the directorate for running without coaches for almost a
year (July 2023-March 2024). The coaches
claim that training continues without proper guidance, while millions of rupees
are being spent on renovating the Director General's office, including
furniture and bathroom fixtures.
The letter further exposes alleged discrepancies in coach
selection. It criticizes the inclusion of retired employees with hefty pensions
and non-performing coaches who lack recent achievements. The coaches urge the
authorities to prioritize qualified and dedicated individuals who can
demonstrably improve player performance.
The plight of the daily wage coaches extends beyond
financial hardship. The letter emphasizes the mental stress they endure due to
job insecurity, particularly during Ramadan when basic necessities are scarce
for their families.
The coaches propose a performance-based system where coaches
are evaluated quarterly based on the number of players trained and their
progress. They further call for
transparency in the selection process and advocate for investigative measures
to address the alleged presence of a "private mafia" operating
fitness businesses within the directorate.
The letter concludes with a criticism of journalists who fail to address the issues faced by athletes, coaches, and sports infrastructure. The coaches urge them to fulfill their responsibility to advocate for the underprivileged.
