Peshawar High Court Calls Out Election Commission for Neglecting Transgender Voters' Rights

Peshawar , In a significant development, Peshawar High Court has demanded accountability from the Election Commission regarding the disregard of transgender voters' rights. The bench, led by Justice Shakeel Ahmed and Justice Sahibzada Asadullah, took action following a contempt of court petition filed by Muhammad Bilal, also known as Sobia Khan.

Advocates Mehwish Muhib Kakakhel and Nouman Muhib Kakakhel, representing the petitioner, underscored the court's previous directive to ensure the safety and inclusion of transgender individuals during elections. However, on the election day, they were deprived of their fundamental right to vote, facing discrimination and humiliation.

Sobia Khan, the petitioner, shared her ordeal of waiting for three hours to cast her vote, only to be met with refusal and neglect. Despite repeated attempts, the polling stations failed to accommodate transgender voters, leaving them disenfranchised. Khan questioned their treatment as lesser humans and demanded justice for the denied rights.

The court, responding to the plea, has summoned the presiding officer of PK-81 to explain the failure to comply with the court's orders. The hearing is scheduled for March 25, 2022, signifying a crucial step towards upholding the rights and dignity of transgender individuals in the electoral process.
