Kalam International Cricket Ground Hits Sixes: Land Acquisition Woes Threaten Imran Khan's Dream Project
PESHAWAR:
The dream of an international cricket ground in Kalam, envisioned by former
Prime Minister Imran Khan, faces a major hurdle as land acquisition stalls
construction. Despite earlier assurances of free land, locals are demanding
significantly higher compensation, throwing the project's cost and timeline
into disarray.
Funding
Gap: Initially, only construction funds (20 crore rupees) were allocated, with
no provisions for land purchase.
Local
Resistance: Residents demand 1 crore per kanal (land unit), rejecting the
government's offer of 52 lakh rupees.
Negotiation
Stalemate: Talks with the district administration remain inconclusive, pushing
costs to potentially 3.42 billion rupees if demands are met.
Legal
Challenge: Locals have approached the court further complicating the process.
Khan's
2020 announcement promised a state-of-the-art ground nestled in Kalam's scenic
beauty. The plan included a hostel and four-star hotel facilities, aiming to
boost tourism and sporting infrastructure.
While
efforts are underway to convince locals through jirgas and revised compensation
offers, the project's viability hangs in the balance. The court case adds
another layer of uncertainty, potentially delaying the project significantly.
