Pakistan's "Flying Bird": Remembering the Legacy of Sprint Champion Abdul Khaliq

Subedar Abdul Khaliq, a true legend of Pakistani athletics, soared across the tracks as "The Flying Bird of Asia." He amassed a staggering 36 international gold medals, 15 silver, and 12 bronze, leaving an indelible mark on the Asian and global sprint scene. His blazing speed and unwavering grit cemented his place in history as one of the greatest Pakistani athletes ever.

Khaliq's journey began in 1954, where he set a new Asian Games record in the 100 meters, snatching the title of "Fastest Man of Asia." This feat earned him the prestigious moniker "The Flying Bird of Asia," bestowed upon him by none other than the then Indian Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

His dominance continued in the 1956 Indo-Pak Meet, where he shattered Asian records in both the 100m and 200m events. At the Melbourne Olympics that same year, he reached the semi-finals in both distances, solidifying his spot amongst the top seven athletes in the world.

Khaliq's relentless pursuit of excellence saw him defend his "Fastest Man of Asia" title at the 1958 Asian Games, further enriching his trophy cabinet with gold, silver, and bronze medals. Throughout his career, he graced international podiums in England, Iran, Greece, China, and Scotland, his achievements inspiring a generation of young athletes.

Though unable to replicate his Olympic success in 1960, Khaliq remained a force to be reckoned with, returning home with gold and bronze medals from the International Meet in Lahore. His story even found its way to the silver screen, featuring in the acclaimed Indian film "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag."

Beyond his athletic prowess, Khaliq dedicated himself to nurturing future generations. He served as coach at various levels, sharing his knowledge and experience with aspiring athletes. His passion for the sport remained undimmed until his passing in 1988, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire Pakistani sprinters to this day.
