Ignored Champions? Olympic Official Decries "Dust in Athletes' Eyes" Award Scheme

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Olympic Association Secretary, Zulfiqar Butt, has launched a scathing attack on the "Emerging Sports Heroes Award," calling it a hollow gesture that throws dust in athletes' eyes. In a fiery address to journalists, Butt decried the lack of appreciation shown to athletes despite their unwavering dedication and stellar performances.

His main criticism stems from the delayed and nonexistent rewards for the province's athletes who triumphed in the prestigious 2023 National Games held in Quetta.

Despite breaking medal records, a staggering seven months have passed without any recognition or prizes. This, according to Butt, is a blatant disregard for their achievements and a mockery of their grueling efforts.

He pointed out how athletes from other provinces who excelled in the National Games received both financial rewards and public accolades. In contrast, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa players face blatant favoritism and neglect.

Butt strongly believes that calling for nominations for the "Emerging Heroes" award while ignoring the existing champions' rightful dues reeks of hypocrisy.

Further fueling his indignation is the fate of the provincial sports foundation. Established during the Awami National Party's tenure, its primary purpose was to financially support and motivate athletes. However, according to Butt, these funds remain inaccessible to the very players they were meant to benefit.
