The HEC's sports trials in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have generated controversy and raised questions about their purpose and transparency. Critics argue that the initiative oversteps the commission's mandate, suffers from political interference, fails to identify new talent, and lacks proper oversight.

The lack of transparency in financial matters further fuels concerns about potential misuse of public funds. Instead of focusing on ventures outside its core responsibility, the HEC should prioritize its core mandate of improving the quality of higher education in Pakistan. Similarly, the provincial sports directorates and the Pakistan Sports Board should be held accountable for their performance in identifying and nurturing athletic talent. Only through a transparent and focused approach can Pakistan hope to develop a robust and successful sporting ecosystem

Questionable Mandate: The HEC's primary responsibility lies in the realm of higher education, not sports development. Critics argue that this initiative oversteps the commission's mandate and raises questions about its priorities.

Political Interference: The trials have been marred by allegations of political influence. Players and officials affiliated with the ruling party, the Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N), have reportedly been favored over those from other backgrounds. This raises concerns about the fairness and transparency of the selection process.

Lack of New Talent: Critics point out that no new players have actually emerged from these trials. Instead, it appears to be a mere reshuffling of existing college and university athletes. This raises questions about the effectiveness of the initiative in achieving its stated goal of identifying fresh talent.

Experience and Expertise: The universities tasked with conducting the trials lacked the necessary experience and expertise in organizing such events. This further casts doubt on the quality and legitimacy of the selection process.

Financial Mismanagement: Concerns have been raised about the financial transparency of the initiative. The organizers' assets before and after the trials have not been disclosed, raising suspicions of potential corruption.
