Successful Conclusion of the First Quaid-e-Azam Chess Rapid Championship in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
The inaugural Quaid-e-Azam Chess Rapid Championship, held at
the provincial level in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, concluded in Peshawar. Male and
female players from across the province actively participated in the
championship, showcasing their mental prowess. In the under-16 category, Sheikh
John Afridi and Wijdan Younis emerged as the winners and were honored for their
achievements.
Organized by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chess Association, the
championship took place at the Archives Library Hall, featuring participants
from various districts, including Peshawar, Kohat, Swat, Mardan, Chitral,
Swabi, DI Khan, and more. The event comprised seven rounds, lasting from
morning to evening. Renowned chess player Emil secured the first position in
the overall competition.
In the open category, Sheikh John Afridi and Kamran Khan of
Mardan clinched gold medals, while Wijdan Younis excelled in the under-16
category, winning the champion trophy. Abida Manzoor from Chitral was
recognized as the best female player in the tournament. Notably, cash prizes
were awarded to all position holders, adding a special dimension to the event.
The closing ceremony witnessed the presence of distinguished
guests, including Aqtdaruddin, Senior Vice President of Pakistan Chess
Federation, Umar Khan, Secretary General of Chess Federation of Pakistan, and
President of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chess Association, Kashif Saleem. Trophies and
cash prizes were distributed to players who achieved prominent positions.
Addressing the audience, Senior Vice President Iqtaruddin
emphasized the positive impact of chess on mental abilities, advocating for its
inclusion in educational institutions across Pakistan. He acknowledged the
efforts of Chess Federation of Pakistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chess
Association in promoting the game.
Umar Khan, Secretary General of the Chess Federation of Pakistan, spoke about the historical significance of chess as a measure of a nation's development and civilization. Despite facing challenges, he expressed the federation's commitment to promoting chess in Pakistan with the hope of nurturing international chess masters under government patronage.
