Lala Ayub Hockey Stadium in Peshawar Remains Plagued by Issues Despite Promises of Resolution
Despite the passage of over a year since its opening, the
Lala Ayub Hockey Stadium in Peshawar continues to grapple with unresolved
issues. These defects, primarily related to the quality of the turf base, have
been the subject of numerous complaints from players and concerned individuals.
In response to these concerns, the Pakistan Sports Board,
based in Islamabad, formed an inquiry committee headed by Deputy Director
Shahid Islam. The committee's report, submitted six months after its inception,
identified problems with the sprinklers, among other issues.
While one sprinkler has been repaired after approximately
eight months, the overall silence on the matter remains deafening. Contracts
were also awarded for work in other areas, but the quality of this work remains
unverified.
The Lala Ayub Hockey Stadium, dedicated to Olympian Lala
Ayub, the father of former sports minister Aqil Shah, has come under fire for
its substandard construction. Syed Aqil Shah, President of the Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa Olympic Association, has repeatedly highlighted these concerns and
demanded improvements, yet the issue continues to be met with inaction.
The #AyubStadiumIssues hashtag underscores the ongoing challenges faced by this important sports facility. The lack of progress in addressing these issues raises questions about accountability and the commitment to providing quality sports infrastructure for the people of Peshawar.
