Environmental Concerns and Infrastructure Damage Surface During Peshawar Sports Complex Reconstruction
Tree Loss and Facility Damage Raise Questions About Project
Oversight
PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN – The ongoing reconstruction of the
Peshawar Sports Complex has come under scrutiny due to significant
environmental and infrastructural concerns. The project has resulted in the indiscriminate cutting
down of trees in various locations and damage to existing facilities.
Alarming reports indicate that the excavation activities,
intended to complete the reconstruction on all four sides of the complex, have
led to the unintended consequence of extensive tree loss. The contractor's
approach has resulted in the felling of numerous trees without any apparent
regard for environmental regulations or the complex's natural landscape.
Moreover, there has been no apparent communication between
the Administrator of Peshawar Sports Complex and the contractor regarding the
fate of the uprooted trees. Questions linger about whether there are plans to
replant the trees that have been axed during the course of the complex's
reconstruction.
The repercussions of the reconstruction efforts extend
beyond deforestation. The collateral damage includes the Muazullah Khan Cricket
Academy, where not only has the net been torn, but the adjacent walls have also
suffered severe damage. Furthermore, the open-air gym has not been spared, with
several machines left demolished in the wake of the ongoing construction.
As the reconstruction progresses, concerns rise about the
environmental toll and the overlooked damages to existing facilities. The lack
of transparency and accountability regarding the project's environmental impact
and the damage to existing facilities is particularly troubling.
