Demand for Merit-Based Selection in PCB Trials: Academy Players Urge Fairness

Players from the academy overseen by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Directorate have voiced their demand for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to adopt a merit-based selection process.

Expressing concern, they emphasized that players in the U-13, U-16, and U-19 categories should not be chosen solely on the basis of relationships and friendships. The plea comes as many talented players face discouragement and exit the game prematurely.

Players trained at the Muazullah Khan Cricket Academy, along with their parents who chose to remain anonymous, disclosed that despite years of participating in PCB U-13 trials, the academy's selection process often involved recommendations and connections.

Subsequently, these players failed to demonstrate notable performance in PCB-organized competitions. Critics argue that such practices undermine the growth of genuine talent and contribute to a lack of competitiveness.

Advocating for a more rigorous selection process, individuals assert that players should be chosen based on their age. Additionally, they propose a thorough examination of documents and medical tests to verify players' ages accurately.

This, they believe, will help identify any discrepancies and deter participants from using fake documents or relying on recommendations.

It is worth noting that the Pakistan Cricket Board is set to select U-13, U-16, and U-19 players later this month, with trials scheduled to take place at the Muazullah Khan Cricket Academy in Peshawar.

The call for a fair and transparent selection process echoes the sentiments of those who believe that merit should prevail in nurturing the next generation of cricket talent.
