Athlete Disappearances Raise Concerns About Human Trafficking in Sports

Following squash games, the alarming trend of athletes going missing while participating in foreign competitions has raised significant concerns. Shockingly, there has been no substantial action taken against this heinous practice, highlighting the need for immediate intervention to combat human trafficking within the sports industry.

Even more troubling is the deafening silence from human trafficking prevention organizations, including the Sports Directorate. Multiple sources within the sports community have revealed that numerous squash and table tennis players are now venturing abroad to compete, only to vanish without a trace.

Among the missing individuals are top-ranking table tennis players from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa who were affiliated with various departments and have now relocated to several European countries. Shockingly, an illicit operation has been uncovered, involving the smuggling of these athletes abroad under the guise of competitions, with hefty sums ranging from 15 to 20 lakh rupees being extorted from them.

What is particularly alarming is that this smuggling operation continues unabated, with the active support of specific individuals and coaches within the associations. These culprits are profiting from their unethical actions, amassing five to seven lakh rupees per player, as per information obtained from sports-related sources.

Despite the gravity of the situation, no one has taken decisive action to address this issue, leaving the safety and well-being of these athletes in jeopardy. It is imperative that authorities step in to put an end to this appalling practice and protect the athletes who are being exploited.
