Roof of Lala Ayub Hockey Stadium Stands Collapses, Provincial Sports Directorate Yet to Take Notice
A
large part of the roof of the stand/audience section in Peshawar's Lala Ayub
Hockey Stadium has collapsed. The roof of the section named after Olympian Qazi
Waheed, which was made of tin sheets, is also gradually disappearing. It is not
clear where the part of the roof that collapsed has disappeared.
The
provincial sports directorate has yet to report on the condition of the
stadium, even though the Pakistan Sports Board Islamabad recently installed new
turf, new goal posts, jungles, and fountains.
The
fact that grass is also growing on the turf, which is not being cut, suggests
that the stadium is not being properly maintained.
This
is a matter of serious concern, as the Lala Ayub Hockey Stadium is one of the
most important hockey stadiums in Pakistan. It has hosted numerous
international matches, including the 1982 Men's Hockey World Cup.
The
provincial sports directorate must immediately take action to repair the
damaged roof and to ensure that the stadium is properly maintained.
