Engineering Wing's Involvement Raises Concerns in 1000 Sports Projects

In a concerning development, certain projects included in the 1000 sports facilities initiative were not assigned to the officials of the Provincial Sports Directorate. Instead, they were directly entrusted to the engineering wing operating under the management of the Provincial Sports Directorate. The engineering wing's primary responsibility is to oversee projects and ensure high-quality work.

 

According to sources within the Sports Directorate, the establishment of this wing as a monitoring body for sports projects was ordered in 2012 by the former Director General, Khalid Khan. However, some officials who had been seconded to the Sports Directorate from C&W (Communications & Works) began engaging directly with contractors. As a result, several projects within Peshawar city were completed with substandard quality and were not even officially handed over to the contractor department. Instead, they were directly transferred to the engineering wing, and the concerned individuals signed PC4 for payment.

 

Payments were made to contractors for these projects, which were part of the 1000 facilities initiative for various sports. Unfortunately, over time, issues have arisen with some of these projects, including the hockey turf and synthetic courts for badminton.
