Peshawar - Sports circles have raised concerns over the
quality of hockey stadiums and turfs constructed in various regions of the
province, urging the Sports Advisor, Secretary of Sports, and Director General
of Sports to take immediate notice of the issue. In a statement, the hockey
circles highlighted that the majority of the grounds built in the previous
regime are of substandard quality, evident from the poor condition of these
turfs.
Notably, the recently installed turf at Islamia College
Ground in Peshawar, along with the hockey grounds in Charsadda, Kohat, DI Khan,
and Bannu, have been subjects of complaint. The hockey circles revealed that
both the civil work and the turf installation have been done poorly and
incorrectly. For instance, at Islamia College Peshawar, the turf has been laid
with nails, causing damage. Similarly, the turf in Abdul Wali Khan Sports
Complex of Charsadda, including the one in Bannu, has deteriorated in certain
areas despite being relatively new.
The root cause of this issue, as stated by the circles, is
the division of responsibilities between two different contractors for the
construction of hockey turfs and civil works, which were supervised during the
previous administration. The sports circles have also urged the caretaker
Sports Minister, Secretary of Sports, and DG Sports to take notice and
blacklist the responsible contractor.
