Running and Football on Kohat's Hockey Turf… Multi-Million Facility Misused, RSO Remains Silent

The hockey turf, which was installed at a cost of millions in Kohat, was supposed to provide the young hockey players with a proper, world-class playing surface. Instead of hockey, the ground is used for almost everything except hockey. Schoolchildren are running laps on it, while football matches are held routinely on it, reducing a dedicated facility to a multipurpose playground.

A hockey turf is designed for one sport only. The surface, grip and overall structure are made for hockey only. No other sport in the world plays on such a turf as it causes serious damage and reduces its life, therefore, results in expensive repairs. Still, Kohat's turf is being utilized like any open field. There is no supervision, no restrictions and no management system to protect this costly investment.

The RSO Kohat, when contacted regarding misuse of the turf, did not respond. And his silence speaks volumes. Public money was spent on this facility, and it is the department's responsibility to see that it is utilized in a proper manner.

The real question remains: If millions were spent building this turf, who is responsible for its protection? Why are hockey players being deprived of the very facility created for them? And if officials do not even respond to basic questions, then how will accountability ever take place?

When public resources are treated this way and responsible officers say nothing, the damage is not to the turf but to the public trust.
